Refugee Walk 2021

WALT feel what it's like to be a refugee. On Monday, Yr 5-8 travelled to the Red zone to pretend to be refugees. My teacher would blow a whistle and we would have to hide before they "shot us with their guns made of air." We were blindfolded and had to go through an area of mines and also had to make it past border control who only spoke Mandarin. We built tents in 7 minutes. My favourite part was when we got rice from a pot straight into our hands because it was so yum. I really enjoyed this but I also felt bad for the refugees.

WALT understand how music has changed over the years.

Today we learned about music through the years. Our task was to find out about 60's songs and when it was released.

New Species - The Figer

WALT: Create a new species with cool adaptions. Today I created a new species called a Figer; a hybrid of a fox and a tiger. Here is my DLO explaining what its adaptions are:

Super Supermarket visit

WALT be a food detective. On Tuesday we went to Pak'n'Save Wainoni to look on the back of packets of food to see the energy, fat total, sugar and sodium. It was fun, although my group kept mucking around. I was surprised to see how much sugar was in muesli bars. How much sugar do you eat every day?

Notes on plants

W.A.L.T show what we've learnt.

Today we had to take notes on a book called Precious Plants. We first did it on Google Docs and then transferred it onto here. Here it is Introduction

• Plants are the most important resource.

• Plants clean the air.

• They give us food.

• Animals that don’t eat plants still need it.

• We can get water from plants.

• Plants are vital for survival.

• Plants are part of the natural kingdom.

Chapter 1

• It used to be common for people to grow their own food.

• Now there is no space to grow vegetables.

• We now have access to food our ancestors will never have seen.

• Plants give us firewood and timber.

• Plants give oxygen.

• Plants cover soil so it doesn't blow away.

• Trees are the dominant plant.

• Wood for building is called timber.

• More people are realising that we need to plant more trees than we use otherwise we will run out of timber. 

• Plantation timber is quick growing and it is slowly replacing other trees that are being cut down.

Chapter 2

• We have a special fondness for plants.

• Flowers are pretty to look at and come in a variety of colours and shapes.

• Most shrubs, herbs and some trees are flowering plants. They inhabit nearly every habitat.

• There are more than nearly a quarter of a million species of known plants.

• Many plants are becoming extinct fast because of humans.

• Some flowers have massive petals that attract insects

• The sunflower has clusters of flowers in one large flower head .

• Some flowers have delicate small petals.

• Some flowers look inside out.

• Visit a florist shop or walk around the botanical gardens and you'll see a small sample of the huge variety of forms flowers can take.

• Some flowering plants have strange habitats. 

• In thick forests some plants, known as epiphytes have adapted to life up in the trees and catching light to survive 

• Epiphytes are not parasites. 

• The Venus flytrap is often sold as a novelty houseplant. It is a green plant just like any other except that eats insects! 

• It catches insects to gain the nutrients. 

• Most insect eating plants grow in areas where the soil is poor.
